Chimneys

Chimney repair is one of the last items that homeowners think about, normally only when the roof leaks or a brick is laying in the yard. We will repair your chimney by either rebuilding the chimney or tuck-pointing the chimney as necessary. We can also perform a combination of techniques to best suit the individual situation.

Tuck-pointing is performed by cutting or grinding out the old mortar joint until sound mortar is found. Then the prepared joint is filled with mortar and tooled to match the profile of the rest of the chimney.

The largest reason for failure in chimneys is due to a cracked cap. The cracks in the cap allow water to seep into the inside of the chimney and erode the mortar from the inside out.

At Garlock-French we install two different types of caps. The first type is a wash cap. This cap is sealed to the top of the bricks and will not overhang the outside of the chimney. The second type of cap is an overhanging cap which is superior. This cap is reinforced poured concrete that will overhang the outside of the chimney by 1 ? inches to allow the water to drip off the cap and not run down the side of the chimney.
