Steep Slope Page

Roofing systems are classified as either steep slope or low slope systems. Steep slope systems are designed to be installed on roofs with a pitch greater than 3:12 (3 inch rise over a 12 inch run). Due to our more severe climate, we prefer to limit steep slope system installation to roofs with at least a 4:12 pitch.

Steep slope roofing systems are composed of a covering material, underlayments and flashing. Common covering materials are asphalt shingles, cedar shingles and shakes, tiles, slate, metal and other synthetic materials. The type and quality of underlayments that are used to cover the roof prior to the installation of a covering material can vary significantly and can be dictated in part by the covering material.

Some things to consider when evaluating steep slope roof systems are; service life, fire resistance, hail resistance, weight, recyclability, warranty (wind uplift), flashing details, cost and, of course esthetics. The most important factor to recognize in a successful steep slope roof system is the quality of the installation and the attention to details.
