Tiles have been used for roofing since ancient times. They are traditionally manufactured from clay or concrete. Recently, tile have been manufactured from metal and a number of synthetic plasticized or rubberized materials.

The tiles used in roofing are usually classified into the following different families: Pan and Cover tile, S-tile, Shingle tile and Interlocking tile. Within each of these families are many different styles and any one style could have different sizes, textures, colors, thicknesses, shapes, etc.

A tile roof system is comprised of three basic components: the tile, high-quality underlayment and the flashing. The life of a tile roof is determined by the care in specification and installation of these three components.

Tile used in this area must have a low moisture absorption rate to prevent deterioration from the freeze/thaw cycle. The weight of a tile roof can range from 800 to almost 2,000 pounds per square (100 square feet). Most tiles are installed with corrosion resistant nails, although there are other methods.

Existing tile roofs that develop leaks can typically be repaired by carefully removing the tile, installing new underlayments and if needed, flashing and re-installing the same tile.

To receive maximum life out of a tile roof system, it is important to perform regular maintenance. Individual tile can break on occasion and they must be replaced, otherwise the underlayment will wear out prematurely at those locations.
