Wood Shakes and Shingles

Wood shakes and shingles used in roofing are manufactured primarily from red cedar. They are graded #1 – Blue Label; #2 – Red Label; #3 – Black Label; and #4 – Green Label, with #1 the recommended grade for use on roofs. Shakes and shingles can also be treated for either added fire protection or decay resistance.

Shakes and Shingles are terms that characterize the two primary classifications and appearances of these materials. Within each of these two classifications, there are a number of variations in size and thickness. Shingles must be installed in a different manner than shakes.

We install our shingles and shakes with nails. Hips and ridges are covered with a strip of EPDM (waterproofing membrane) prior to the installation of the wood hip and ridge pieces to protect the joint where those planes of the roof meet.
