CEDAR SHINGLES

Wood shingles are tapered down on both sides to a specified thickness, and come in three common sizes. The shingles are sold by the square, where a square of shingles will cover 100 square feet, when laid with a standard exposure to the weather. It is important when installing cedar shingles that the side joints of 3 rows of shingles do not line up on top of each other. There should be two nails in each shingle.

The Standard size, is 16" long and the thickness of 5 shingles set on top of each other would equal approximately 2" at the butt end. The standard exposure to the weather is 5", so there is triple coverage, plus 1 inch.

Perfections are 18" long and the thickness of 5 shingles laid on top of each other is 2 ¼" at the butt end. The shingles are laid over underlayment with a standard exposure of 5 ½ “to the weather.

Royals are 24" long and the thickness of 4 shingles laid on top of each other is 2 “at the butt ends. Royals are normally laid over underlayment with a standard exposure of 7 ½ “ to the weather.

There are variations of fancy sawn butt shingles that are cut according to a pattern as well.
