The most commonly installed materials are #1 Blue Label 16-inch smooth sawn shingles, and 24-inch hand split shakes. Cedar shakes are commonly used in two thickness ranges: medium shakes, between ? and ? inch in thickness, and heavies, between ? and 1? inch; cedar shingles are approximately 3/8 inch thick. Shakes and shingles are available with various treatments to increase their decay and fire resistance.
